contents: In the first quarter of the eighteenth century, there was a fierce war of words in France about the merits of classical and modern literature under the name 'Querelle des anciens et modernes'. This frontispiece for a satirical play on this question, published in Amsterdam, shows two bookcases with, on the left, the books of the 'anciens', and, on the right, those of the 'modernes'. A similar 'Poets War' was raging at the same time in the Republic.
