contents: No authentic portrait is known of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the art of printing. The oldest dated portrait can be found in the large biographical reference work of Henricus Pantaleon: 'Prosopographiae heroum atque illustrium virorum totius Germaniae' (Bazel 1568-1570), but this woodcut is also used for other persons. The portrait by André Thevet is the best-known and has also been used as a model for later illustrations.
