contents: The transport of books took place by wagon or by ship. For their protection they were packed in bales or barrels. Usually, printed books were sent in loose gatherings: binding took place when they arrived. Books often had to be transported over long distances which meant that they had to be transhipped or transferred one or more times. This was not a fool-proof system: mistakes, such as wrongly addressed or lost batches, might occur.
