contents: Amsterdam was the centre of the Dutch book trade and everything that was published in the Netherlands was sent to Amsterdam to be distributed from there across the whole country. Publishers had their 'correspondents' or representatives in the capital, who took care of the distribution of their publications. The foundation in 1871 of the 'Bestelhuis van den Nederlandschen Boekhandel' (Distribution office for the Dutch book trade) centralised the book traffic in one location and was in the long run to end the competitive and cumbersome system of correspondents.
