contents: In 1845, the Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des boekhandels held a competition: 'Is there a decline or languishing of the book trade? If so, what is the origin of that decline or languishing and what are the means to arrest the progress of that decline and languishing and how to increase the growth of the book trade and increase its standing?' This brochure was the winning entry by the well-known bookseller of The Hague, K. Fuhri, who considered that 'Those who pride themselves on the glory of our trade may perhaps be foolish but those who complain about its decline are guilty of ingratitude'.
