contents: With the arrival of the Batavian Republic in 1798 all guilds were abolished, including that of the booksellers and printers. Now everyone could freely settle everywhere as bookseller or printer, a fact against which the former members of the guilds strongly resisted. In 1801 the guilds were admitted again, but their future remained uncertain and dependent on all kinds of ever-changing regulations. Only in 1818 did King William I cut the Gordian knot and the guilds were abolished once and for all.
