contents: Textile book binding of white silk, embroidered with silk in many colours and metal thread. Textile was used for bookbinding as early as the Middle Ages. It was applied particularly in books in royal collections and books for women. Under the influence of the English queen, Elizabeth I, embroideries increasingly found acceptance from the second half of the 16th century. The sophisticated kind of embroidery as shown here was not made by the binder himself but by professional embroiderers.
