Also, successive education acts (1857, 1878, 1889) required ever higher standards of professional skills from schoolmasters. According to the rhyme on this picture it led to a significant upgrading of that profession: `Should I not love him dearly/ Who with soft tact teaches us/ And with many useful matters/ Augments our knowledge ever more?
