contents: This illustration is from the well-known Sinterklaas-booklet by J. Schenkman, of which the first edition was published around 1850. It is remarkable that the pupils are almost all boys. Yet the number of girls that was to go to school increased considerably in the course of the 19th century. It were girls and women in particular who were reading more and more and are on the whole considered to be the new readers of the 19th century.
