contents: In the 17th century, France was the major paper producer for the Dutch Republic. The modest production of the Netherlands itself in the Veluwe and in the Zaan region, received a strong incentive at the end of the century due to the long-lasting wars with France. The raw materials for hand-made paper were linen and cotton rags, ground to a pulp and mixed with water. In this picture the papermaker makes paper by dipping a mould of woven copper thread in the vat until a sheet of paper is formed.
