contents: This print shows a bookbinder's workshop with the four 'principal and most relevant parts of the art': pounding with a mallet on the gatherings to make them firm and compact; trimming: a special knife (the 'shaving knife') is drawn along the text block to trim the pages; the sewing of the gatherings, and finally the burnishing: working the leather and smoothing it. Behind the burnishing figure (the master of the workshop) hangs a tooling cabinet. The well-dressed boy is taking a book to a client. The lower half of the print shows some instruments necessary for bookbinding such as a pair of scissors, a knife, sewing things, glue and a lying press.
