contents: The idea for this Vaderlandsch A-B Boek was based by the author from Limburg, Johan Hendrik Swildens (1745-1809) on a German example of 1773: the Neues ABC Buch by C.F.Weisse. Swildens wanted a replacement for the old Protestant Groot ABC Boek or Hanenboek . What he eventually brought on the market with great success was a learning and reading book in one, a disguised patriotic manifesto with nice pictures and texts which urged the youth on to patriotic civic spirit and love of the fatherland.
