Johnson where it is said of her 'although she had quickly descended into the valley of years' she still knew how to arouse the 'most tender emotions'. In her room there was 'a large bookcase, in the Chinese fashion [or according to the foolish fancy of our leading countrymen, a la Grecque] carved and heavily gilded', in which there was 'a complete collection of plays, novels and poetical works in the modern languages in which love is treated as an art and pleasure enlivened by the imagination.'
