contents: The first training school in the Netherlands for wood engravers was established in 1840. The wood engraving is, like the woodcut, a form of relief printing, with the major difference that the wood engraving was made on the crosscut and not lengthways in hardwood such as, for example, palm wood. It was a pioneering illustrative technique because a skilled wood engraver could achieve a high degree of detail and accuracy. The wood engraving school in The Hague trained a number of successful engravers but did not last long: the school was closed in 1849.
