contents: The stones were used to make lithographs were stored here. 'The stones which are used for lithography consist of mortar, clay and gravel. The best stones, which have the finest grain and the most even colour, are to be found at Solenhofen, in Bavaria'. They were, therefore, very expensive. Lithographic stones could vary in thickness from c. 10 cm. for large ones to c. 6 cm. for the smaller ones. After a stone had been used the image had to be carefully scraped away: all the grease and chalk was removed so that when a new image was printed the previous one was not printed along with it.
