contents: The combination publisher-bookseller lost ground in the course of the 19th century: a growing group of booksellers pur sang appeared, also denoted with the term 'retail trader'. Especially after the middle of the century, a increasing differentiation and specialisation developed, as can be seen at the bookshop of Otto Petri, established in Rotterdam between 1853 and 1882. Incidentally, the arrangement of the façade with a door on one side and two windows next to each other, differs from the usual arrangement of a door in the middle with windows on either side.
