contents: This illustration is from the well-known Sinterklaas-booklet by Jan Schenkman, the first edition of which was published around 1850. In the course of the 19th century the reading public increased greatly, but not much can be said about the individual readers. In so far as can be seen in this picture, Sinterklaas gives the girl two luxurious looking booklets. From the middle of the century, besides expensive editions for readers well provided with capital, cheap popular editions were also brought out for people less well- off.
