contents: By his rejecting both decoration (Art Nouveau and Wendingen style) and the traditional typographical form and by his aiming at asymmetrical rhythmics governed by an area of tension, Piet Zwart is one of the first Dutch representatives of functional typography. An important aspect of this is also the way in which photograph and text are formed into a unity: 'a visual book in which optical image and sound picture want to be continuously active'. His ideas about design influenced young generations of graphic designers to such an extent that this book of 1938 still strikes us as very modern.
