contents: In the transition period between the Classical era and the Middle Ages, the philosopher Boethius (480-c. 524 AD.) wrote 'De consolatione philosophiae' (The consolation of philosophy). In the five chapters of the book he wrote, among other things, of the influence of Fortuna, the problem of the theodicy (the question of suffering and evil in our world), and the matter of the free will in relation to God's providence. This work was very popular in the Middle Ages: read and studied in monasteries, schools, universities and at court . Besides a Latin tradition, a vernacular tradition developed resulting in translations of the book into various European languages such as Dutch.
