contents: The work of type cutters traditionally consisted of making moulds for type. On the head of a metal bar a type form was cut out in relief in reverse with a burin . The mould was then filed off and the punch was finished. From the 1880s this process was simplified by the invention of engraving- and composing machines, but some things were still done by hand.
