contents: Since the reputation of Laurens Jansz Coster as inventor of the art of printing was more and more disputed abroad, the time was ripe to defend his honour and that of his native country by means of a statue for which the money had been raised (not without effort) by the nation. The bronze statue, designed by Louis Royer, was unveiled on 16 July 1856 in Haarlem. The whole event was accompanied by a three-day spectacle.
