contents: Detail of the painting of the Dam, ascribed to Hendrick van der Burgh. The shop sign of the Hondius family, a 'watchful dog' with two globes, can easily be seen here. As there were at that time no house numbers, signs and plaques were used to indicate an address. Like the printers' devices, such house and shop signs often had a referred to the profession of the printer or bookseller.
