contents: Due to increasing mechanisation and because of the invention of so-called 'binder's linen' a change was introduced around c. 1830 to the practice of bookbinding. Machine binding replaced more and more the handmade binding made at the request of a private buyer. The so-called industrial bookbinding was a mass product manufactured for the publishers in workshops such as the one in the photograph.
