contents: Stereotype is a procedure whereby casts (of plaster or of thick, specially prepared, hard paper) were made from pages composed with individual type, woodcuts, blocks and suchlike. The casting was called stereotypy or 'styp'. The procedure was used for printed matter of which much had to be produced in a short time (especially newspapers). A 'styp' is also a name for the stereotypy equipment itself.
