contents: In 1886, the Berne Convention was held which settled the translation right of books at an international level. The Netherlands did not join at this point, because the ideas on the conditions of this Convention were strongly divided. This cartoon by Joh. Braakensiek from 1910 shows Minister Heemskerk during the seventh International Publishers' Congress in Amsterdam promising a number of internationally known figures from the world of books to join the Berne Convention, which eventually happened in 1912.
