contents: Until well into the first half of the 19th century, reading lessons remained aimed at imprinting Christian virtues. This primer of Henry, the paragon of virtue, (`who always so politely takes off his hat when he passes by) by the Haarlem teacher N. Asselijn, of which the first edition appeared in 1810, became proverbial for this kind of lesson. For, it was hoped, `children who mix with Henry would become even more honest, for they would learn from him how they should act'.
