`Wat wonders wat nieuwes', drawing of a pedlar with almanacs Bramer, Leonard (illustrator) year: 17e eeuw type: tekening drawing detail: nee dimensions: 20x 16 cm. related terms: ambulante boekhandelaars almanakken period: 17e eeuw classification: G: Boekhandel en uitgeverij M0: Algemene werken: encyclopedieën, almanakken K: Maatschappelijke aspecten van boekproductie en -verspreiding contents: In this pen drawing by the Delft painter Leonard Bramer (1596-1674) a pedlar is depicted selling almanacs. In his right hand he holds a sheet of paper with the text: `what miracle, what news', and in his left hand the text: `new almanacs'. Pedlars and singers called at both towns and villages and sold their wares by singing songs, making music (with a violin or hurdy-gurdy), calling their merchandise out loud and reciting short verses. Established booksellers saw this as dishonest competition and attempted to have their liberties restricted by the town council. origineel: ©description: Den Haag Koninklijke Bibliotheek ©reproduction: Den Haag Koninklijke Bibliotheek Leiden Prentenkabinet |
