contents: In 1833, the 23-year old W.P. van Stockum set up a bookshop in two rooms in the Gortstraat, The Hague. His customers initially consisted of friends of his father who was cashier at the Nederlandse Staatsloterij, and of acquaintances acquired by intensive 'networking' in the midst of the cultural elite of The Hague. In 1845, Van Stockum moved his business to the Buitenhof. Besides his bookshop, he also started an antiquarian bookshop where auctions were held regularly, businesses that were continued by his heirs. In 1906, the sales room and the antiquarian bookshop were separated from the bookshop accommodated in a different company under the name Van Stockums Antiquariaat.
