contents: Research into the books preserved from this early period of the Leiden University Library has shown that this engraving is not reliable in all respects. The larger books did not stand with their edges forward, but upside down and with their spines forward in the upper part of the bookcase. The books were fastened to an iron rail by a bronze chain at the top of the reading desk and by toppling them over one could consult them while standing. Only a very select group could use the library freely; professors, governors of university and town. Students were only allowed access for a few hours per week and could only look into books under supervision.
