contents: This photograph of the public reading room and book collection on the Oranjesingel in Nijmegen was taken between 1916 and 1931. The housing of public libraries varied considerably in the first half of the twentieth century. It could be anything from stately premises such as here in Nijmegen to a simple house such as the Wippolder branch of the public library in Delft. Beside the name plate, it says 'Admission free'. Although libraries in the first half of the twentieth century were financed poorly or only to a certain extent by the government, it had long been believed that admission had to be free. Libraries did, after all, serve the public interest and contributed to the edification of the whole population of the country
