contents: The Oval Room in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem - the oldest museum in the Netherlands, founded on the instigation and with money of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778) - was designed by the Amsterdam architect Leendert Viervant (1752-1801) and was finished in 1784. In the room below the scientific instruments and the collections of, amongst other things, minerals and crystals are shown. On the gallery above are twelve built-in bookcases, shut off by doors in which green curtains protect the books behind fine copper gauze against the incoming light. Inscriptions above the doors show which categories of books are kept in the bookcases. On the iron balustrades are fold-out reading desks for the consultation of the books.
