contents: Tree marbling is an eighteenth-century method in which a naturally coloured binding was given a marbled effect resembling the flattened branches of a tree. To obtain this effect ink or another type of paint was dribbled over the boards which were held at an angle. These examples clearly show that the paint has run from the back to the front. The most common colours used in this method were brown, blue and green.
