(fotograaf/photographer) year: 1986 type: dia slide detail: nee related terms: boekdrukkerijen zetterijen zetten period: 20e eeuw classification: D: Geschiedenis van de boekdrukkunst contents: A hand compositor at the 'N.V. Boekhandel en Drukkerij', formerly E.J. Brill in Leiden working with Chinese and Japanese characters. Behind him is an enormous type case. Such a case consists of as many 'racks' as there were characters, and Chinese and Japanese have thousands of characters. Each compartment has not only the lead character but also the matrix with which that new character could be cast. The compositor at E.J. Brill's did not know Chinese or Japanese, but he could find the characters flawlessly. origineel: ©description: Dr Jos A A M Biemans Leiden ©reproduction: Dr Jos A A M Biemans Leiden |
