contents: Until the second half of the 19th century, the production of novels consisted mostly of translations. The breakthrough of the original novel took place after that period. This is the title page of the first edition of Jacob van Lennep's best-known work, "De lotgevallen (vicissitudes) van Ferdinand Huyck". It is a strange tale of adventures, situated in the 18th century, about a mysterious knight-pirate and his sweet daughter Amelia. The illustration (in steel engraving) shows the hero Ferdinand in the summerhouse with Amelia, while three strangers enter.
