contents: A lithographic cylinder press, made in Germany, but also used in the Netherlands. Lithography or stone printing, invented at the end of the 18th century, meant an important innovation for the illustration technique. Originally lithographs were printed by means of a simple hand press, but cylinder presses were also developed for the printing of illustrative material, just as they had been for the `normal' printing of books, .
