contents: This type of treadle machine or treadle platen, originally from America but also made in Germany, temporarily replaced the hand press. Just as with an old-fashioned sewing machine it could be easily operated by pressing the foot on a pedal. The treadle machine was mostly used for small print jobs where production was higher than with a hand press. Due to increasing mechanisation in the form of these types of presses, and later with cylinder presses, owners of printing shops could take on ever younger and cheaper workers so that in the end wages declined greatly to the great dissatisfaction of the original printers.
