contents: Just as in the 16th century, bookshops in the 17th century were often in or near a public building. In this painting by Pieter Saenredam a bookshop is depicted to the right, near the arcade of the former town hall. The caption on the awning reads `Pieter Saenredam Has first Drawn this from Life with all its Colours in the Year 1641 and Painted this in the Year 1657'. Meanwhile the former town hall no longer existed: it had been burnt down on 7 July 1651.
