contents: Picture of two figures in clothing as worn on Walcheren and Schouwen. This hand-coloured line etching is part of a book written in Dutch and French on the manners and customs during the French period (1795-1814). The costume books by Evert Maaskamp (1769- 1834 ) with prints engraved by Lodewijk Anton Portman (1804-1853), are typical examples of the kind of hand-coloured luxury works that were becoming en vogue in this time and which needed professional illustrations. Botanical and zoological works, books on gardening, topography and travelogues also belonged to this type. This may also be the oldest book with illustrations printed on vellum paper.
