contents: Photographs were also printed in the same book by way of illustration. Wood engraving was a normal method in the 19th century for the illustration of these kinds of books but, from the end of the century, photomechanical reproduction made its entrance. Individual photos were placed in the middle of the page or they were page-sized as in the page on the right. The thin lines around them are also typical of these kinds of pictures.
