contents: Frontispieces are an important element of Dutch 17th-century (illustrated) books, as decoration, allegorical table of contents and as an enticement for the buyer. This is a typical 17th-century baroque frontispiece as regards design and iconography. The Amsterdam patroness of the city is praised and honoured by representatives of countries from all quarters of the globe with whom the rich merchant town of Amsterdam traded. A fitting image for a book that gives a rather embellished description of this town. The format of this book is also typical of the 17th century.
