contents: Charles Rochussen (1814-1894) was in addition to being a water-colourist and painter in primarily an illustrator (etcher, lithographer, drawer for wood and steel engravings) and counts as one of the greatest Dutch representatives of the Romantic Movement in the fine arts. His lithographs were particularly popular: he made some 150 lithographs as separate prints, and many book illustrations. One of his earliest works, and also one of his most successful, is this illustrated work of Vondel's Gijsbrecht; each lithograph is composed of small scenes.
