contents: This Delft prize binding shows in tooling the Delft coat of arms, with the Greek letter Y: the symbol of Delft, and the aphorism Per angusta ad augusta (along a narrow road to the sublime). Prize bindings were books that were awarded as prizes for the best pupil of a form of the grammar school. It was usually an edition by a classical author, bound in parchment with the coat of arms of the town tooled in gold on the spine, and on the inside an illuminated address. This binding is also a good example of a binding sewn on thongs, which are laced through the covers.
