contents: Page from a Latin primer, known as the ' Doctrinale', with the Greek alphabet. The book by Alexander de Villa Dei, written around 1200, was much used in schools throughout Europe to teach Latin grammar, until it was replaced in the sixteenth century. The text is extant in many manuscripts and was printed several hundred times in the course of the centuries.
