This "Grooten Atlas" (Great Atlas) Blaeu is one of the most famous Dutch books of the 17th century. From a commercial point of view it was an enormous enterprise which had been started by Joan's father, Willem Jansz Blaeu. In 1672 many copies and the copper plates for the printing of the maps were destroyed in a fire.
