contents: This print is taken from the well-known 'Sinterklaasboek' by Jan Schenkman, the first edition of which was published around 1850 and of which reprints (with adapted plates) appeared into the 20th century. The layout of the shop is typical for the 19th century: the books, arranged by subject, are placed in bookcases against the walls with a counter in front of them.
