The gentlemen in this illustration are sitting in a café attentively reading at a reading table of a type which was often to be found in Dutch 'grand cafés'. The well-known Hotel Americain in Amsterdam, for example, still has such a table. All reading together, the reading material is free, the atmosphere is warm and cosy. A table such as this attracted many customers and reading behaviour also encourages consumption intake. origineel: ©description: Den Haag Koninklijke Bibliotheek ©reproduction: Uitgever |
