contents: The 'Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet' (Rotterdam Reading Circle) was founded in 1859 as an initiative by a local banker, Marten Mees. In 1865 this reading room was accommodated in a luxury building on the Gelderschekade bought by its members. It was unfortunately lost during the 1940 bombing. With its extensive collection of books and periodicals in the field of science, history and culture, the Rotterdam Reading Room attracted on some days more than 200 visitors. The collection is now part of the Erasmus University Library.
