contents: The "Geschiedenis van Koning David" (History of King David), of which the text is derived from the Bible, was an extremely popular chapbook and was in the Northern as well as in the Southern Netherlands also used as a textbook in schools for more than two centuries. The first (Dutch) editions are from the beginning of the 17th century. This 18th-century edition is printed in a Gothic type and has several little pictures. At school reading came first, before arithmetic and writing, for it was important for children to read the Bible and other religious writings. Actually, the rise of literacy from the 17th century was continued in the 18th century.
