contents: In 1818 P.J. Prinsen, teacher in Haarlem, published a new method for teaching children to read. In this method he made use of a case with, to the left, compartments for individual vowels and, to the right, compartments for consonants. In the middle is a composing frame to form words. The children had their own reading boards on which they could make words. They were also given pictures with figurative images. This phonetic method was based on learning to read by speaking the sounds out loud, combined with letters and pictures. It proved very successful.
