contents: In the 19th century the book became a mass product. Ever larger groups of the population began to read. Technology met this trend by making cheaper 'reading books' with cylinder presses and machine-made paper. Book design lagged behind: the machine-made type and paper saw to an ever more uniform presentation as can be seen in this "Max Havelaar", printed on the cylinder press at Van Munster en Zoon in Amsterdam.
